RTI activist abducted and tortured

Dankaur (Greater Noida): Five days after an RTI activist was abducted and tortured by unidentified assailants, he is not just braving police apathy but even the local panchayat is pressuring him to withdraw the case. The criminals burnt the victim's private parts with cigarettes and brutally beat him with hot iron rods. UP Police call it a "normal incident" and claim that there is nothing wrong with the injury marks.

Narrating the nightmarish experience, the victim said that on December 13, while he was on his way from Sikka village to Dankaur an SUV rammed into his motorbike. Before he could react, 4-5 miscreants picked him up and fed him sedatives. "I was then taken to some place where they kept beating me up for four days and burnt me with cigarettes and hot iron rods," said the 29-year-old victim, Anoop Singh, a vice-president of BJP's Dankaur unit.

When TOI visited Dankaur police station, the SO Shailender Pratap Singh came up with lame excuses for not paying heed to case. Ducking all questions, Singh reluctantly said, "We have not questioned anybody so far, but we will probe from all angles."

Anoop's uncle, Bachchu Singh, said that the victim had raised his voice against inferior quality of work in the area. He had filed an RTI in October with Yamuna Expressway Authority asking for details of work and contractors.
