CHENNAI: Former Supreme Court judge A K Ganguly, who is mired in sexual harassment allegations levelled by a law intern, found support from lawyers in the Madras high court, which he headed for seven months in 2008.
On Tuesday, a large number of advocates took out a rally in support of Justice Ganguly, saying he was being targeted by vested groups for having taken a tough stand in sensational cases. S Prabakaran, president of the Tamil Nadu Advocates Association (TNAA), said it was a direct assault on the independence of the judiciary.
"If activist-judges are targeted and their reputation is tarnished in this manner, no judge worth his salt would deliver judgments against powers that be," Prabakaran told TOI. Asked whether the lawyers did not believe the intern's version of the incident, he said the issue was beyond the allegation levelled by her.
"This is a fraternity. Justice Ganguly had made scathing observations against powerful sections of the government involved in massive scams. Invisible hands are behind the campaign against the judiciary, and the intern issue has been blown out of proportion to undermine the influence of the judiciary," Prabakaran said.
On Tuesday afternoon, advocates started their rally from the southern gate of the high court and ended it at the main gate. There was a brief meeting and a dharna, throwing traffic on NSC Bose Road out of gear for about an hour. But court work was not affected. "We were particular that regular court proceedings should not be hit by our expression of support to Justice Ganguly in particular and the entire judiciary in general. The protest was timed to coincide with the lunch recess," Prabakaran said.
