Businessmen honeytrapped, blackmailed

The 15-member gang kidnapped big shots and took nude pics of them with girls. The photos were later used to blackmail

A gang of nearly 15 members has been targeting businessmen from Ullal in Mangalore over the last four months. It is suspected that at least nine people have fallen prey to the gang, popular as 'target gang'. Three complaints have reached the Ullal police station. A member of the Ullal police told Bangalore Mirror: "The gang identifies rich businessmen or landlords. They study their weaknesses and trap those who have extramarital affairs, by using women."

Quoting a case, a senior officer from the Ullal police station said, "The complainant claimed that he was kidnapped and taken to a room and his nude pictures with a girl were taken. The gang then began blackmailing him that the pictures would be released to the media if he did not pay them money."

The police claimed that it was difficult to get leads about the gang as most victims were not willing to lodge a complaint. It was only recently that a businessman took the initiative and filed a complaint. He was followed by two others. In one case, on knowing that there was a house available for rent, the gang sent a girl to the owner of the house and trapped him.

Recently, the Ullal police arrested three people from the gang, including the prime accused Ilyas (27) who has at least 20-25 cases against him in Mangalore. He runs a shop called Target Autolinks and the gang's name was derived from that. From the mobile of one of the accused, police recovered three video clips. While, the porn clips were allegedly circulated on Whatsapp, police could not get details of to whom these clips were sent. It is learnt that button cameras and watch cameras were used to shoot the video clips. However, the police have recovered only mobile phones so far.

Two others arrested include Asif alias Manda Asif (36) and Showkath (35). They have reportedly confessed about their involvement in nearly nine such cases during the last four months.

"We have vital leads about their associates. Another 15 people are likely to be arrested. We have also got names of those who assisted the gang with girls," the officer added.

According to sources, a prominent businessman from Ullal who had fallen prey to the gang is refusing to lodge a complaint against them. It is rumoured that the businessman was being blackmailed for Rs 1 crore, but the final settlement was made for Rs 30 lakh. Police confirmed the blackmail but declined to divulge the amount paid. It is also said the gang claimed Rs 9 lakh from another businessman, but the final settlement was for Rs 5 lakh. In a third case, a businessmen reportedly gave the gang Rs 1 lakh. Locals feel that the gang is supported by some politicians and is operating between Kasargod and Kundapur.
