Chennai: TV channel editor arrested on sexual harassment charges

The Tamil Nadu Police have arrested a senior editor of a private television channel, which is run by an influential politician’s family, for the alleged sexual harassment of a former colleague.
The incident comes around a month after a journalist accused Tehelka founder-editor Tarun Tejpal of rape, triggering a fresh debate on women’s security at workplace.
Dinesh Kumar, an editor of Chennai-based Captain TV, was picked up late on Saturday night following a complaint by an ex-employee of the organisation, the police said.
The channel, run by family members of Desia Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam  (DMDK) chief Vijaykanth, however, denied the charges against Kumar in a press release.
“The arrest was based on a false complaint. The said sub-editor was relieved from her job one month ago. She lodged a police complaint to take revenge,” the release said.
The police took advantage of the situation to harass Kumar as he had organised a protest seeking action against some people who had attacked a reporter, an employee of the channel said.
The press release also said the arrest was a political conspiracy.
Vijaykanth’s party had won 28 of Tamil Nadu’s 234 seats in the 2011 assembly elections. The DMDK had contested the polls in alliance with the ruling AIADMK, but they parted ways after the victory.

The DMK and the Congress are trying to cosy up to Vijaykanth for an alliance ahead of 2014 general elections.
