Kapil Sharma gets show-cause notice from Maharashtra women commission

Kapil Sharma's comedy show has not only earned him guffaws but also accolades. Today he is a name to reckon with in the television industry. But, cracking a joke is no joke, there is a constant risk of offending sensibilities.

And if you are on national television, the danger multiplies. Kapil's apparently harmless banter has not gone down too well with certain women's rights activists. An NGO has filed a complaint with the Maharastra State Commission for Women. And the Commission has issued a show cause notice to the channel and the comedian demanding an explanation within a fortnight.

The episode of Comedy Nights with Kapil aired on January 5, had the host speaking about the dismal condition of Indian roads coupled with government apathy. During the act Kapil mentioned in jest that one advantage of having a pothole-riddled road is that travelling on such a stretch can help a poor, pregnant woman pop out the baby. This irked some NGOs who perceived it as disrespect towards women. They also had issues with the way two characters in the show, Dadi and Pinky, are portrayed.

On January 7, Raj Asrondkar, who heads a social movement called Kaydyane Waga, met up with advocate Sushiben Shah, the chairperson of Maharashtra State Women Commission, and filed a complaint. When contacted, Asrondkar confirmed the news, "The comments on potholes are fine but talking about a pregnant woman in the same context is not funny. Also, Dadi is always shown drunk and Pinky is available to anyone."

Shah insisted that they were not against the show but women should be treated with dignity. "Few woman characters on the show are not portrayed correctly. Are Indian woman really like that? A show case notice has been sent to them and we have given them 15 days to reply."

Colors spokesperson denied receiving any such notice and said: "We have not got the notice yet. Hence, we won't be able to comment on the matter as of now."
