NCP leader's sexist remark: Women's provocative attire leads to rape

MUMBAI: Asha Mirje, a Nationalist Congress Party leader and member of Maharashtra Women's Commission, sparked off a major controversy on Wednesday with her remarks that women are to be blamed for the rise in the number of rapes, NDTV reports.

Speaking about the Nirbhaya gang-rape in Delhi in December 2012, Mirje questioned why the young medical student was out with her friend so late at night. She also commented on the Shakti Mills gangrape in Mumbai last year.

She was quoted by NDTV as saying, "Did Nirbhaya really have to go watch a movie at 11 in the night with her friend? Take the Shakti Mills gang-rape case. Why did the (survivor) go to such an isolated spot at 6 pm?"

"Rapes take place also because of a woman's clothes, her behaviour and her being at inappropriate places," Mirje added. She was addressing the party's women workers at a gathering in Nagpur.

Her remarks on the sensitive issue stirred a hornet's nest. She had to later apologise for the comment following an outcry over her comments. "What I said was my personal opinion," she said.

The Delhi gangrape in December 2012 had sparked public outrage across India, bringing thousands of people onto the city streets in protest against authorities' failure to ensure the safety of women.

Under pressure to show results, the government set up a special "fast-track" court to try the then accused men quickly in a country where rape trials tend to congest courts for five to 10 years.

In response to the public outcry, the government also fast-tracked tougher laws against sex crimes, but it resisted calls to change the juvenile law and return the adult age to 16 from 18.

The case led to the introduction of tougher rape laws in March and for the first time open debates on gender crime were held on television debates and social media.

The gangrape of a photojournalist took place in August, 2013 in Lower Parel area of Mumbai where the 23-year-old woman, an intern with an English Magazine, had gone for an assignment.

According to police, the men tied up the friend who was accompanying her and raped the woman. (With inputs from agencies)
