AURANGABAD: A lecturer and his family from Pune have been booked on the charges of demanding dowry of Rs 5 lakh from his wife. The police said that the lecturer, who was earlier employed with a private educational institute, lost his job almost a year back and allegedly started demanding the amount so that he could spend the amount as a bribe in order to secure a job.
The case was registered against the lecturer and four of his family members at the Satara police station in Aurangabad. The lecturer's wife had approached the city police's Women's Grievances Redressal Cell in October 2013. When efforts to solve the matter amicably failed, the cell sent a letter to the Satara police station, asking the police to register a case of harassment for dowry against the family.
In her complaint to the police, Vidya Umakant Diwekar (34), currently residing at her father's place in Satara stated that she was married to Umakant Govindrao Diwekar in December 2009. She stated that on the very next day after their wedding, her mother in-law Shantabai allegedly pointed out that Vidya's parents did not gift a gold chain to Umakant.
The police said that a few days after getting married, Vidya and Umakant shifted to Hadapsar in Pune, where the husband was working as a lecturer with a private institute. Almost a year back, Umakant lost his job. To get a permanent job at an educational institute, he along with his family members allegedly started pestering Vidya for getting Rs 5 lakhs from her father, who retired as a class-I officer from the state electricity board.
The complainant stated that her in-laws demanded the amount since they knew that her father had recently retired and had received a considerable amount as gratuity. When she could not get the demanded sum, the family allegedly started harassing her, following which she returned to her father's residence in July 2013, along with her three-year-old son.
The other family members, including Parubai Rajesh Upade, a resident of Mawal in Pune, Ramakant Govind Diwekar and Shubhangi Ramakant Diwekar, both residents of Godavari Residency, near Gajanan temple in Aurangabad, have been booked on the charges of mentally and physically harassing Vidya.
