PUNE: A 77-year-old doctor from Sadashiv Peth was arrested on Thursday after his caretaker accused him of rape. The Vishrambaug police also arrested the caretaker and booked her accomplices for allegedly extorting Rs 3 lakh from the doctor and demanding Rs 25 lakh more for not lodging a complaint against him.
The doctor and the 23-year-old woman were produced in the court and were remanded in police custody till January 27.
Assistant commissioner of police (Vishrambaug division) Deepak Humbare said the doctor lives alone in his apartment in Sadashiv Peth. His son stays abroad while his daughter lives in Goa. The doctor had appointed the caretaker in March 2012.
Humbare said that on Wednesday the doctor approached the police and lodged a complaint against the caretaker and her two accomplices accusing them of extorting Rs 3 lakh from him. "The doctor said they were demanding more money for not lodging a police complaint against him," Humbare said.
Later, the caretaker also approached the police and lodged a complaint against the doctor accusing him of rape. "She alleged that the doctor had also indulged in unnatural sex with her," he said.
The doctor has been charged under sections 376 (rape) and 377 (unnatural offence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) while the caretaker has been charged under section 384 (extortion) of the IPC.
