COIMBATORE: A software engineer on Sunday was booked for harassing his wife and demanding dowry of 2 lakh. His parents have also been booked for harassing the woman.
M Chitra (27) of Palanisamy Gounder Street at Rathinapuri married K Manikandan (30) of Neikkarapatti in Dindigul district on June 6, 2011. He is a senior software engineer working in Bangalore. Her parents gave 43 sovereigns of gold ornaments as dowry.
Manikandan allegedly demanded 11lakh from his wife to buy a house in Bangalore. But she told him that her parents were not in a position to help him. He then sold her gold ornaments and bought a house on loan. The couple came to Coimbatore on May 2013 and he again demanded 2lakh from her as dowry. She refused to arrange the amount and he left her at Rathinapuri, Chitra said in her complaint.
"She waited for the last seven months for her husband. But his family wanted more dowry and told her family that they would accept her only after receiving the money. So, she approached us," said Rajeswari, inspector, all women police station (central).
Based on her complaint, the police booked Manikandan, his parents Kathirvel and Suguna under sections 498 (A) (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 406 (punishment for criminal preach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.
