Work less, talk more to save your marriage

LUDHIANA: Psychiatrists in the city have sounded the alarm bell for couples who want to get married and more importantly, stay married. They are of the view that the seasonal nature of work in the industrial hub is one of the primary reasons for couples calling it quit.

Dr Puneet Kathuria, a psychiatrist from CMC Road and president of Indian Association of Private Psychiatry, Punjab, said, "Every month, about 20 to 30 couples come to me with depression stemming from a bad marriage. Pressure exerted by seasonal nature of work is often too overwhelming."

Seasonal nature of work is natural in a city where different industries have different seasons of production. Work pressure is concentrated in that span of time. This leads to differences in marriage. Of late, volatile marriages have become a serious cause for concern in the city. Reasons include infidelity, seasonal work, non-availability of recreational resources, personality differences, social media and heightened sense of individualism.

Individualism entails both partners clinging on to little things that they perceive as symbols of their personality. Psychiatrist Dr Rajeev Gupta discussed a case in which the couple told him they were living in different rooms, using different washrooms and following individual lifestyles. Ironically, most of these cases involve newly married couples.

Tanisha (name changed), 25, got married one and a half years ago. It was an arranged marriageand everyone expected things to remain smooth. But after a few days, she started feeling lonely as her husband was busy with business meetings and targets. She did not have enough people to talk to as she was newly wed. She was also supposed to be at home most of the time. This bred misunderstandings.

Tanisha's husband Manish is an exporter. Being into the business of hosiery, he was under great pressure in December and was unable to spend time with Tanisha. The marriage collapsed under the weight of work pressure and unreasonable expectations.
