The reception for the third marriage of a 30-year-old businessman didn't go quite as planned after he was arrested for dowry harassment at the venue. The first wife of Adnan Mukadam, a former ICICI bank employee, has accused him of dowry harassment.
Adnan is the son of Iqbal Mukadam, chairman of Gateway Elephanta Jal-Vahatuk Sahakari Sanstha Maryadit, which owns several ferry boats.
He was arrested from Courtyard Hotel in Amboli on January 10, where he was celebrating his third marriage when his first wife Shabana showed up.
"The reception had just started when around 8 pm, Adnan's first wife Shabana came and created a ruckus, following which the police arrested Adnan saying he was wanted in a dowry harassment case. It was very embarrassing for the family," said a relative, requesting anonymity.
In her FIR lodged at Kasturba Marg Police Station, Shabana alleged that soon after they were married in 2008, Adnan's family started torturing her physically and mentally. She alleged that they demanded Rs 50 lakh from her and had already taken Rs 17 lakh in installments.
"Apart from the torture, the main problem was his several affairs. He left me at my sister's house one day saying he would come to pick me up after a week or so, but stopped my entry into his house after that. Somewhere in the beginning of 2012, I got a call from his second wife with similar complaints against him. But I could not do anything at the time because I was depressed," Shabna told Mirror.
She claimed she had been pursuing the case for the past six months and finally managed to get an FIR registered against him on his wedding day. "He got married to his third wife in a morning ceremony on January 10. I went to the reception only to confront him," she said.
After his arrest on Friday, Adnan was produced before a magistrate and sent to police custody till January 12.
Meanwhile, the police have been asked to file an explanation as to why Adnan went all the way from the police station to the court room barefoot, after his lawyer complained about the issue.
"It is a gross violation of human rights. What is the point of law if it is not followed? Moreover, in case of dowry harassment complaints, the police are supposed to send notices to both parties and try to resolve the issue. But in this case, no such attempt was made. In fact, he was arrested from his wedding reception, without the slightest knowledge of such a complaint against him. How humiliating must it be for his wife Reshma to be standing inside court just a day after her wedding," said Adnan's lawyer Nuzhat Chimate. Refuting all allegations against Adnan, Nuzhat further said that Shabana was the one who left her marital home.
"Shabana left Adnan and not the other way round. Why is she complaining after four years? She claims to live with her sister as her parents have passed away. Why would Adnan, who belongs to a well-to-do family, make such petty demands?" asked Chimate.
