Chennai women more religious so sexual crimes are lower: Babulal Gaur's new gem

Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Babulal Gaur was in Chennai recently to know about the functioning of Tamil Nadu Police, and when he returned he had a 'valuable piece of information' to share: Women in south India are comparatively less prone to sexual assault because of their religious nature and their urge to wear full clothes.

"The women in Tamil Nadu wear full clothes and hence the crime rate is lower there as compared to other states," he told mediapersons while inaugurating the Ayodhya Nagar police station in Bhopal on Thursday.

Gaur's controversial remarks suggesting a connection between women's dresses and crimes against them came as he talked about his last week's visit to Chennai where he had held meetings with top police officers, including DGP K. Ramanujam and Chennai police commissioner S. George.

The minister said that when he asked the police officers in Chennai about the low crime rate in their state, they attributed it to the sufficient number of police stations per lakh population and to the religious mindset of women.

Last year, while expressing grief over the Delhi gangrape incident, Gaur had commented that short dresses of women had led to the rise in cases of sexual harassment.

Another BJP leader and the then industry minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, while referring to a molestation incident in Guwahati, had said in 2012 that dressing provocatively was the main reason behind such incidents.

"Women should dress in such a way that they invoke respect in others. However, unfortunately, women are dressing provocatively, which is leading to deviation in society," Vijayvargiya had said.
