Ex-judge accused of harassment

KOLKATA: A lawyer has lodged a complaint has been lodged against a former judge of Calcutta high court for allegedly harassing her after she refused to marry the accused. The complaint was lodged on Tuesday with sub-divisional police officer of Bishnupur in Bankura, as the complainant is staying there fearing attacks on her.

The lawyer in her mid 50s alleged that the ex-judge had initially proposed to marry her through a woman lawyer about six months ago. "After I refused to marry him, he had been regularly harassing me through some hired goons," she alleged. She also complained that some relatives of the judge had also threatened her.

The lawyer, who had been practicing in the Calcutta high court since 1998, said that for the past fortnight she is staying at her ancestral home in Bishnupur as she is fearing attacks on her. For that she had shifted to her ancestral home in Bishnupur from Kolkata.

She used to stay as a paying guest in Kolkata.

In her complaint, she also alleged had stated that the ex-judge had sent some people threatening with dire consequences, as he is upset with the proposal being turned down.

"For the past few months, some people, sent by the ex-judge, have been threatening me regularly," the lawyer alleged. She has sought police security as the accused, according to the complainant, visits Bishnupur also. stated in her complaint to the SDPO Bishnupur that she be provided with security to live peacefully and practice. She mentioned in her complaint that the ex-judge frequents Bishnupur too.

She also alleged that police initially were reluctant to accept a complaint against a former judge. According to her, she had earlier lodged complaints after being attacked by the henchmen of the accused. told TOI that when she approached the police they were unwilling to accept the complaint, as it is against an ex-judge. For that she has doubts if her complaint will at all be probed. "Because he has excellent contacts and for that the state administration may not be willing to probe the case," the complainant said. She stated that she had been attacked by a number of times by the henchmen of the former judge and for that had also lodged complaints earlier. She said "I am in a traumatic situation due to the threats. Even twice I was attacked in the bus while travelling from Bishnupur."

As the Bishnupur police were unwilling to accept the complaint, she had sent it by post to the police station and also to the top cops. She has also sent complaint letters to the home secretary and the Chief Justice of India. In her complaint to the CJI, she requested the setting up of a panel of judges, like what was done in the case of Justice Asok Kumar Ganguly, to save her life and has also urged to set up a committee of judges as it was formed to probe the complaint against Justice Ganguly.

Her brother also an advocate said that he had consulted the matter with an additional district judge of Bishnupur, but the ADJ is too anxious that the complainant might not get justice as the complaint is against a well known former judge of high court who is known to be powerful. His brother said "We had earlier planned to lodge a court complaint, but as we have doubts that a magistrate will not entertain a complaint against a former high court judge who is known for his proximity to power, we did not file it. Now we are going to write to the President of India against the former judge, as I am also afraid of the criminals."

However, a senior IPS officer said: "First the mental state of the complainant needs to be checked and then can we approach further."
