Man, kin acquitted of dowry death charge

CHANDIGARH: Additional district and sessions judge Preeti Sahni, on Friday, acquitted a man and his parents in a dowry death case. Those acquitted have been identified as victim’s mother-inlaw Sumitra, husband Naresh, and brother-in-law Mukesh.
The prosecution failed to prove the charges against the accused thus facilitating their acquittal.
The trio in June 2010, were booked on charges of dowry death after Sangeeta was found dead under mysterious circumstances. The victim was newly married and her parents alleged she was tortured by her in-laws for dowry. Sangeeta was married to Naresh, in April 2010, and was found dead in June 2010. Following her death, her father Prithvi Singh had lodged a complaint accusing Sangeeta’s inlaws and husband of torturing her for dowry. The post-mortem report revealed the cause of death as poisoning.
Dissatisfied with the verdict, Sangeeta’s kin would file an appeal to get justice. HTC
